The St. Patrick's Day Dash is one of largest St. Patrick's Day fun run in the country, attracting nearly 15,000 runners, walkers, joggers & crawlers. This year’s Dash will be Sunday, March 13th at 9:00 am sharp, originating at Seattle Center, and finishing at the Qwest Field north parking lot.
A Seattle tradition for the past 27 years, thousands of people join the fun by dressing in the Irish spirit and joining friends and family in the great Seattle outdoors. Rain or shine, the Dash is a memorable day, anticipated by thousands of novice and experienced runners each year.
The event was founded 27 years ago, by then University of Washington track coach Alan Bonney, as a way to help past Olympic marathoner Regina Joyce qualify for the Irish World Championships. With expectations of around 900-1000 for a first year effort, the Dash attracted nearly 5,000 enthusiastic participants.
Eventually established as a corporate entity, Bonney recognized the importance of supporting local needs through this community event. Since its inception, the St. Patrick’s Day Dash has made donations to local charities, and to date they have donated over $125,000 to a variety of non profit organizations and running clubs.
The Detlef Schrempf Foundation, in its second year as the Dash partner supports the event through volunteer support. The level of the donation is determined by the number of people that participate in the run and overall expenses. “The amount of publicity alone that we receive through the Dash makes our involvement well worth the effort”, explains Detlef Schrempf, “Of course it doesn’t hurt to have a big party waiting for you at the finish line!”.
