Understand The Game
The Detlef Schrempf Foundation has been awarded four federal grants by the United States Department of State. This program is called, Understand the Game. The program officially launched in November 2002 with a successful program in the Philippines and continued in 2005 with a trip to Malaysia. In 2006, Detlef took Understand the Game to Morocco. 2008 marks the Foundation's first trip to the Middle East, specifically Jordan.

From the Olympics to grassroots cultural sport exchanges, sport has become increasingly relevant as an avenue for international leaders in the academic, business, government and athletic communities to develop communication and cultural understanding. Due to today's tumultuous political climate and as part of America's on-going commitment to be an interactive citizen of the globe, Understand the Game will act as a conduit for American goodwill by providing a reciprocal educational and informational sports exchange program. The goal is to provide internship opportunities and training to basketball players, coaches, and organizations in foreign countries. In return, the Detlef Schrempf Foundation hosts aspiring foreign coaches and players either at the United States Basketball Academy in Oregon or with host families in the Seattle area.

Understand the Game’s mission is to promote basketball instruction strategies and tactics to teach the techniques of basketball, communicate American culture and build future leaders of basketball coaches to carry on the positive messages of sports diplomacy in around the world. The campaign also makes a dedicated effort to enhance the lives of underprivileged youth in every country traveled through orphanage and hospital visits, as well as charitable donations.

DETLEF SCHREMPF WELCOMES JORDAN TO SEATTLE

UNDERSTAND THE GAME

Seattle, Wash.—The Detlef Schrempf Foundation traveled to Amman, Jordan for its fourth Understand the Game tour in August of this year. Understand the Game is a basketball diplomacy exchange program that promotes positive aspects of American culture around the world, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Partnering with the Jordan Basketball Federation, Understand the Game took a group of seven basketball personalities from around the country, led by former NBA All Star and Two Time 6th Man of the Year winner Detlef Schrempf. WNBA Hall of Fame Nominee and decorated woman basketball player, Cynthia Cooper, also joined the team, in an effort to showcase the capabilities of women in basketball.

Now, as part of the cultural exchange, 12 Jordanians will travel to Seattle. Their scheduled arrival on November 4th will unveil a new understanding of American basketball and culture for the 10 young basketball players and two coaches.

Six families from Bellevue High School, including Detlef and Mari Schrempf will host the diplomatic team, and the Detlef Schrempf Foundation has scheduled a variety of activities for the visitors, including college basketball games, Seattle sightseeing, and even a Bellevue High School football game.

"As a product of a sports exchange program, I know the direct impact sports can have in facilitating dialogue and cultural understanding," said Detlef Schrempf. "Particularly with the way Americans are being viewed today, it is truly an honor to have this opportunity to have guests from Jordan to help us build relationships with its people."
